….Why are fires different colors?  The color of a fire’s flame depends on several different conditions.  Temperature, chemical composition, and the amount of oxygen present.  When more oxygen is present, the flames tend to be hotter with the hotter parts of the flame being whitish-blue.  The cooler parts will have more of an orange color.  The chemical composition also effects how a flame looks, since each element has its own characteristic color.   Who knew?

In the spirit of the season, we bring you, without commercial interruption, a letter written by eight year old Virginia O’Hanlon to the New York Sun and the response to that letter printed in an editorial on September 21, 1897. The work of newsmen Francis Pharcellus Church has since become history’s most reprinted newspaper editorial. What’s more magical than a firefly light show on a warm summer night? Just remember that if you catch fireflies, you can keep them in a jar (with a lid punched to let in air and a moistened paper towel on the bottom) for only a day or two before you need to set them free. (1) There are more than 2,000 species of fireflies, a type of beetle. Despite their name, only some species produce adults that glow. Fireflies in the western United States, for example, lack the ability to produce light. (2) Males that do glow use their flash...

The most valuable assets to employers are their employees!  They are the essence of our success and it is imperative that we protect them.  All employees should be trained to identify building safety equipment, including exit signs, emergency lighting, and portable fire extinguisher locations. In the event of a fire, they will know where the safety equipment and exits are located. They can also guide others in the building to safety.  The more you know, the better prepared you are.  Stay safe!

20 Things I bet you didn’t know about fire.

1  Fire is an event, not a thing. Heating wood or other fuel releases volatile vapors that can rapidly combust with oxygen in the air; the resulting incandescent bloom of gas further heats the fuel, releasing more vapors and perpetuating the cycle. 2  Most of the fuels we use derive their energy from trapped solar rays. In photosynthesis, sunlight and heat make chemical energy (in the form of wood or fossil fuel); fire uses chemical energy to produce light and heat. 3  So a bonfire is basically a tree running in reverse. Keep your fire...
